A family story in the heart of Monferrato

The history of Pierino Vellano Winery dates back to the 16th century, at the time of Emperor Charles V’s campaigns in Italy. The Vellano family, originally from Burgundy, was granted land in Monferrato in recognition of services rendered to the Emperor. The land was immediately planted with vines, beginning a winemaking tradition that would continue for centuries.

The first cellar was carved into the tuff rock, a simple space deeply connected to the land, and remained in use until the end of the 17th century. As the family grew, so did the business. A second cellar was built, which today houses ACQUAVITAE Spa, followed in 1867 by the renowned Cantinone, a unique complex made up of three interconnected cellars.

Behind this unusual structure lies a family anecdote that perfectly reflects the practical spirit of the Vellanos. Dionigi Ruggero Damonte, great-uncle of the current owner, decided to create three separate working areas because his nephews, although they shared the same passion, struggled to work together. What began as a practical solution has now become part of the charm and history of the estate.

Despite the difficulties, the family’s passion for wine never faded. Only one of the sons, Giovanni, known as “Gioanot”, chose to continue the winemaking activity, preserving a tradition built on dedication and a deep connection with the land. His son Pierino later developed the winery further, eventually moving the business to its new premises in 1961.

The story continues today with Maurizio Vellano, who, after gaining experience outside the wine industry, chose to return to his family roots together with his wife Daniela. Their decision marked the beginning of a new chapter focused on hospitality and wine tourism.

Today, their daughter Giorgia also plays an active role in the growth of the project, representing the new generation of the family and bringing enthusiasm and a contemporary vision to a tradition that continues to evolve.

Pierino Vellano Winery has thus become an integral part of Ca’ San Sebastiano Wine Resort & SPA, where the family story lives on every day, transformed into authentic experiences to enjoy and share.
